He had long struggled with emphysema and COPD, and finally succumbed surrounded by his loving daughter, grandchildren, and many friends. Our beloved father and grandfather leaves his daughters Donna Pickthall (husband Stanley) and Karin Galm; and his grandchildren Brandon, Daniel, Tyler, and Steven. He is predeceased by his wife, Marianne Galm.
Walter also leaves behind many close friends in the community and in the independent living residence where he entertained his neighbours with his quick wit and easy smile.
Born December 26, 1929 in Bad Kostrich, Germany, Walter grew up during the great depression and World War II. “Opa” spent many hours in conversation, and often regaled us with tales of Germany before, during, and after the war. He crossed from East to West Germany in the years before the building of the Iron curtain, and there met his beloved wife Marianne. He moved to Vancouver in the early 1950’s, and worked most of his lifetime in the mining and construction industries.
Walter loved to play cribbage for hours, and at a penny a point, had squirreled away many a peanut jar of pennies from those willing to match him in this game of skill. He was also known in the community as the “Candy Man.” He would make his daily rounds of errands to the shops, and always carried a pocketful of Werther’s candies for the tellers at the bank and the shopping clerks along his route.
Dad, no words can express our loss. You have been an anchor to this family throughout a lifetime for us. We will miss you dearly; go in Peace and save us a space at the Great Table.
