Born in Somerset a son of the late Edmund V. and Mary (Soares) Arruda he was a longtime resident of Swansea.
A graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Class of 1948, he was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He earned a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from the former Bradford Durfee College of Technology, now University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and a Master’s in Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He was a beloved art teacher in the Bristol-Warren School District for 33 years before his retirement.
Active in his community, he was a past member of the Swansea Conservation Commission, a member of the RI Teacher’s Association, the National Education Association NEA, a National Honor Society Advisor for Warren High School and a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. A skilled artist, he painted in watercolor, oils and acrylics and enjoyed listening to classical music.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Pamela Greene and her husband David of Fall River; one son, Charles January and his wife Mary Lamothe of Portsmouth, RI; and five grandchildren, Katie Greene Canuel and her husband Jamie, Victoria Greene, Alexander Greene, Ryan January and his wife Kellie, and Alisha January; five great grandchildren, Benjamin Greene and Shelby, Memphis, Piper and Silas January. He was the brother of the late Edmund Arruda, Jr., John Arruda, Lucy Munche, Eva Almeida and Gilbert Arruda.
His visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 from 9:00 – 11:00 am in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Road, followed by a service in the funeral home at 11:00 am. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Somerset. Relatives and friends invited.
