Simeon (Sim) F. Hawes, age 68 of Middleboro, MA passed away Friday, March 31 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham, MA following a stoic battle with cancer. He was the best friend for 40 years and loving husband for 38 years of Bernadette (Ferreira) Hawes.
Born in New Bedford, MA, the only son of Frederick and Sarah (Jennings) Hawes, he spent his youth in Dartmouth, MA and lived 33 years of his married life in Barrington, RI before recently moving to Middleboro.
Sim was a graduate of Dartmouth High School, class of 1973 where he ran cross country and track, played trumpet and was on the golf team. He held an Associate’s degree from Bristol Community College and worked as Head of the Grounds Department at University of MA, Dartmouth, retiring after 38 years in 2017. He then enjoyed part-time work at Viti Mercedes-Benz in Tiverton, retiring in 2022.
He was a member of and usher at the Barrington Congregational Church, UCC and served on their Buildings and Grounds team. Sim was a volunteer and strong supporter of their Loaves and Fishes ministry. He also served for many years on the Town of Barrington’s Parks and Recreation committee.
His joy came from time shared with his wife and his dogs. He loved socializing with dear friends and his beloved family. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, a spontaneous jaunt on his Raleigh or Schwinn bike or a good game of golf with friends. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Among his favorite vacation spots were Maine, Portugal, Bermuda, Canada, England and Scotland.
Sim’s wry sense of humor, good nature, twinkling blue eyes and unassuming demeanor will be greatly missed, but always treasured.
In addition to Sim’s dear wife Bernie, and sweet dog Ellie, he is survived by two sisters, Grace Wyss (David) of Dartmouth and Anna Hawes (Richard Paramoure) of Taunton; three brothers-in-law, Tony Ferreira (Christine) of Rehoboth, MA, Michael Ferreira (Diane) of Huntington, CT and Joseph Ferreira (Betty) of Cape Coral, FL.
