Charles Cyril MacDonald

18 September, 194021 January, 2021

We regret to announce the passing of Charles MacDonald of Whycocomagh following a long and courageous battle with the c word. He is survived by his partner of 39 years, Sandra, who was by his side through it all and held his hand at his bedside when he passed. He is also survived by Sandra’s children Steven (Donna), Sue (Joe), Sharon (Mike), David (Jeannine), Debbie (Bill) and Danny (Nicole) and a special lady Ida Jackson. Dad was predeceased by his mother Sarah (nee MacAskill) father Dan David MacDonald, brothers Lloyd, Kyle, Gifford and sisters Marge and Shirley. Dad was adventurous growing up and was never really afraid to meet any challenge from painting the towers at the heavy water plant to building homes in Paupa New Guinea to building a community centre in Cape North, nothing was too big to tackle. It was on one of his many travels that he met the mother of his children, Joan in Brisbane, Australia. They returned to Sydney and eventually to the family farm in Bay St. Lawrence where they raised three children, David (Michelle), Stephen (Debbie) and Kerry. In later years dad turned his hand to fishing. Building a successful business and in turn asked his son David and daughter-in-law Michelle to move home from Ontario and partner with him in this new chapter of their lives. It was this decision that brought two new “buds” into Charlie’s life, Stephen Charles and Allister Andrew MacDonald. My dad’s positive impact on their lives and theirs on his will be measured in generations. Dad’s attitude throughout his hardships never failed to amaze us all. His positivity and gentle nature never left him right up to the very end. We can only hope to emulate his “one day at a time” mantra and conduct ourselves accordingly. Finally we must acknowledge the efforts of the countless doctors and nurses who gave dad such excellent care along the way. The Nova Scotia Health Care Authority has to be proud of the men and women in this province who get up every day and night and deliver compassionate and life saving care to people like our Charlie. Thank you and bless you all! Cremation has taken place. A service celebrating Charlie’s life will be announced later this year. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting

To Sandra, David and all the family
So sorry to hear of Charlie's recent passing as he was a good decent man who lived his life the way it should be I think with an emphasis on family , hard work and not afraid to accept any challenge thrown his way. And of course like any Cape Bretoner the tendency to never forget his roots. As we age it is difficult to lose so many family members and relatives and while inevitable it doesn't make it any easier. Know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Sandra, and the Mac Donald family,

Very sorry to read of Charlie's death. He and my mother, Mary(Whiteley) Fitzgerald were first cousins, and I'm sure they probably shared some of the MacAskill character. Sending you my condolences from Baddeck.
