Elizabeth (Betty) Anne (Gillis) Doucette passed away suddenly while returning home from a family funeral in New Brunswick on Wed., October 14th, 2026. Betty, known as everyone’s mom, was an exceptionally caring wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandparent and great grandparent who left everyone in her presence, feeling that they were her favorite person. And they were right, because she loved everyone deeply and unconditionally.
Betty was born on the 29th of August, 1932 in Ingonish Beach, Cape Breton, NS. Although her main occupation was raising 8 rambunctious kids, she also worked in the hospitality industry for many years. Betty had many passions in life, including travel, a devotion to the church and CWL and spending time with her friends at the weekly craft group. She especially loved strolling along the Freshwater Lake trail, longing for the smell of salt air and a view of the breakers rolling in on the beach. Feeding birds, ducks and foxes (and the occasional moose) gave her great pleasure as well, as it drew her closer to the Creator of all such things. Anyone that ever sat down to a feed of Betty’s spaghetti and meatballs would attest that she was an amazing cook and that it brought her great joy to pamper people with her culinary delights. Betty was also a force to be reckoned with when it came to playing cards. Whether it be Scat, Rummy, Crib or Skip Bo, she brought her game face, and sorry was the opponent that dared deny her a spot on the victory podium.
Betty was predeceased by her husband Ernest (Ernie) Leo Doucette, parents Alexander Gillis and Corrine Gillis (Benoit), sisters Thelma (Tilly) Nicks and Gemma Doucette, brothers James and Ralph Gillis.
Betty is survived by her 8 children, daughters Erna (Lindsay) Hatcher, Lynn Doucette, Joan (Vic) Creuzot, Maureen (Jim) Singleton, sons Terry Doucette, Paul (Lucy) Doucette, Peter Doucette and Darren (Carolyn) Doucette, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, many special nieces and nephews as well as her sisters June Gillis and Paulette Tedford.
Visitation will take place on Monday, October 19th, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, 36205 Cabot Trail, Ingonish, NS. Church services will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Ingonish Beach, NS on Wednesday, October 21st at 11am. A small reception will follow at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Graveyard Fund, or a charity of your choice.
