It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved uncle Gordon ‘Gordie’ Budge on Monday, August 30, 2021 in New Haven. Gordie was born on May 23, 1944 to Melvin and Blanche (Turner) Budge of New Haven.
He is survived by his nieces Anne-Marie (Kevin), Melvina (“young girl” as Gordie called her) (Steven), Tena (Joey), Linda (Kenny), Amy (Sandy) and nephews Merrill (Heather), Melvin (Melissa) and Davey (Melissa). Gordie is also survived by his brothers-in-law Jimmy and Herbie, sisters-in-law Annie and Brenda, aunts Edith and Lil as well as numerous cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. He leaves behind an entire community to grieve but especially his good buddies Bruce, David, Georgie, Ronnie and Wallace.
He was predeceased by his parents Melvin and Blanche, sisters Eleanor and Marie, brothers Alex 'Alec', George ‘Buddy’ and Allie and best friend Ricky.
Gordie lived a simple life. In his early years he fished with his father and often played ice hockey in the winter months. Gordie was an avid Montreal Canadians fan and always made sure that people knew of their wins over the Leafs, or as he liked to call them, “short legs.” He enjoyed spending time in the woods either chopping firewood, taking a walk, picking blueberries or setting snares. Gordie loved going for drives and trouting with his buddy Georgie. He was especially proud when he was asked to help out with odd jobs within his community and he would always point out what a great job he did. Gordie was happiest when he was visiting with family and friends, chatting, telling jokes and having a good laugh while sharing a delicious meal or treat. He was welcome wherever he went. Gordie will always be remembered by his infectious laugh that could be heard across the cove.
A celebration of Gordie’s life will take place with a graveside ceremony at St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery on September 12, 2021 at 2:00pm in Neil’s Harbour. Masks are required.
Donations in Gordie’s memory can be made to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Neil’s Harbour or the Neil’s Harbour-New Haven Community Development Association. Pictures and stories of Gordie’s life can be found and shared in the Facebook group Memories of Gordie. Arrangements entrusted to Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home.
Rest in peace New Haven’s sweet angel.
I’s the b’y that builds the boat
And I’s the b’y that sails her
I’s the b’y that catches the fish,
And brings ‘em home to Liza.
