It is with profound sadness that the family of Helen Joyce Warren announce her peaceful passing on June 20, 2026, in the compassionate care of the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Ingonish, Nova Scotia, Helen was the daughter of the late Russell and Alice (Stockley) Warren. She spent most of her life in the community she loved, where she was known for her kindness, sense of humor, generosity, and devotion to family.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, Russell and Alice; her sisters, Grace, Annie, Katie, Isabel, Gladys, and Viola; her brothers, Stan, Kenny, Norman, and baby John, who died in infancy.
She leaves behind her daughter, Margaret (Murphy); her son, Charles (Frankie); her grandchildren, Christopher and Brianna; her great-grandchildren, Finley, Oaklynn, and Riley; many nieces who loved her dearly, including her lifelong friend, Evelyn (Thorne) Gillis.
Wherever Helen called home was always a place of warmth and laughter. She had a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors, as well. Whether hiking the hills, mountains, beaches, and trails around Cape Breton, fishing, hunting, or simply enjoying the beauty of her surroundings, Helen felt most at home outdoors. And, she could beat the best on a pair of snowshoes! Helen also had a special compassion for animals and was known to take injured or abandoned creatures into her care, patiently nursing them back to health whenever she could.
Creative and curious, Helen enjoyed drawing, photography, puzzles, and preserving memories. She had a remarkable habit of recording the world around her, collecting notes and details about local happenings, cruise ship visits, world events, Hollywood news, stories, and jokes that caught her interest. She found joy in both the extraordinary and the everyday, and she had a gift for remembering and sharing those moments with others. Helen's quick wit and wonderful sense of humor brought smiles to many faces over the years. She enjoyed a good story, a hearty laugh, and time spent with those she loved. Her strength, compassion, and quiet wisdom will be remembered by all who knew her.
A woman of faith, Helen believed in God, in Heaven, and in the promise of being reunited with loved ones who had gone before her. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she has found peace and rests now in God's loving care. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the homecare workers (who she grew very close to), the VON nurses, and especially the Palliative Care Unit for their kindness, compassion, and exceptional care during Helen's final days.
Though she is no longer with us in body, Helen's love, laughter, and gentle spirit remain in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
Cremation to take place immediately, with internment to be at the First United Church cemetery in Ingonish on August 7, 2026 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia in memory of Helen Joyce Warren.
