It is with great sadness, that we the family of Barclay Cunningham announce his death on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at the age of 86. Barclay was born on February 10, 1936, in Dalhousie, NB and grew up in Loggieville, NB.
After graduating from St. Francis Xavier University and Technical University of Nova Scotia with a degree in Civil Engineering, Barclay worked for several years for Montreal Engineering in Calgary, Montreal, and Newfoundland. It was in Montreal that he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy. In 1972, Barc had an opportunity to move to Cape Breton, so he and Dorothy relocated with their two children where he worked for Devco until his retirement.
Barclay was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He loved skiing, vacations in Ingonish and jazz. But his great passion was his MG T series cars. A longtime member of the New England MG T Series Register and a founding member of the British Car Club of Cape Breton, Barc and Dorothy drove thousands of miles and had lots of adventures across Canada and the US with car club friends they made for life. Many an afternoon was spent in the garage working on one of his or his friend’s cars. He could always be counted on for expert advice and guidance for any repair.
Barclay is survived by his daughter Sharon (Stuart) Anderson and his son John (Shelley) and grandchildren Erin, Curtis, Jerry, and Taylor. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (nee Taylor), parents Paul and Margaret, brothers Vince and Paul, sister-in-law Joan and special aunt Annie MacPherson.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Celtic Court for their care and kindness and for making Dad so comfortable during his stay. Special thanks to Don Peters, Carol Miller, Bill English and Steve and Wendy Saxon for your friendship and support.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will take place Friday June 16 at 2:00p.m. at T.W. Parkview Chapel, 755 George Street, Sydney, officiated by Fr. Conrad Edwards followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
