Mischievous from his very first steps, Brian grew into a master storyteller with a heart of gold and a laugh that could shake the rafters. He had a rare gift for turning an ordinary day into a tale worth retelling. Over the years, Brian racked up plenty of unofficial Cape Breton records - most notably for his frequent appearances in the Cape Breton Post. Whether he was beaming at the camera with a snapping turtle, receiving a lifesaving award, or standing tall at a local protest, Brian was a man who lived out loud.
As a gifted woodsman and gardener, some of Brian’s greatest joy was in sharing a fresh feed with family and friends. His cup was truly filled by giving to others, whether through the bounty of his garden or the rewards of a hunt. From his early misadventures at the old quarry to the local dances of his youth, he carried a lifelong love for good old Rock n’ Roll, and a tireless work ethic. His hands were always busy - from his years with the City of Calgary and the Sydney Steel Plant to running his own plumbing business.
Brian was an immensely proud father and an encouraging Papa. He was a constant teacher, taking his children and grandchildren on endless adventures—ice fishing, picnics, and exploring the island’s hidden back roads - always ensuring they saw the beauty of Cape Breton through his eyes.
He is survived by his children, Eric, Robin (Brian), Kaitlyn (Ben), Kelley (Jacob), and Adam. Cherished grandchildren, Ruby and Addie. He leaves behind his siblings, Sharon, Brennan (Linda), Becky (Keith), Gerald (Kathy), Anita (Bernie), Leona, and Patricia (Barry), as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved to cheer on at the rink. He shared a particularly deep bond with his nephews and partners-in-adventure, Peter and Kenzie. Brian was predeceased by his long-time partner, Cora Dennis; his parents, Thomas and Florence Sheppard; and his sister, Karen Lewis (Dougie).
The family wishes to thank Dr. Carol Critchley and the compassionate staff at the CBRH for their exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, please do a good deed for someone in need, or take a long drive down a road you’ve never travelled, admire the beauty around you, and think of Brian.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 2:00–5:00 PM at the WINS Hall, 1836 Pt. Edward Hwy, Edwardsville. Please come prepared with a story to tell—just as Brian would have done.
We’ll see you later, Boss.
