It is with profound sadness that we share the news that Bruce passed away in the early hours of November 14th, following a very short but aggressive illness. His loss comes far sooner than any of us ever expected.
Born in Halifax, Bruce moved with his family to Cape Breton at a young age and was a true Cape Bretoner to his core. Anyone who was lucky enough to spend Saint Patrick’s Day with Bruce also knows how proudly he celebrated his Irish roots, and he showed that same passion as a devoted fan of the Montreal Canadiens.
After graduating from Sydney Academy, Bruce completed his Bachelor of Science at Dalhousie University and then went on to work for the Federal Government. He quickly worked his way up through various roles until he became the manager of Service Canada in Cape Breton, where he remained until his retirement.
For all who knew him, Bruce will be remembered for his contagious laugh and booming voice. Any time you walked into a room, you would know right away if Bruce was there, in particular at Lingan Golf Club, where he spent much of his time beginning at age 10, when he would be dropped off at Ashby Corner and hitchhike his way to the course.
An avid reader and dog lover, if he wasn’t on the golf course, Bruce was happiest with a good book and his black lab curled up beside him. He was an intelligent, kind, and gentle soul, who was incredibly loyal, always put others first, and valued family and friends above all else.
Bruce is predeceased by his parents Gerald and Barbara Reardon and his brother-in-law John Whalley. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Anne (Whalley) Reardon, siblings Dr. Gerald (Ann), Peter (Pat), Susan, Sheila, Tim (Linda), sister-in-law Patricia (Eric) Ferguson and brother-in-law Clem Whalley, as well as many nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Bruce’s life will be held from 12 to 4 pm on Saturday, November 22nd at Flavor 19 at Lingan Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
To his many friends we offer our deepest condolences. In the words of Irish poet William Butler Yeats: “Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends.” Go Habs go!
