Shenacadie, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
After a lengthy and difficult battle with cancer that she fought with much strength and grace, it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Nicholson, age 60 years, in the early morning hours of Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, Cape Breton, NS.
Carol was predeceased by her brother Mark (2014), and is survived by her parents John and Eileen Nicholson of Shenacadie, her sister Donna (Doubleday) and husband James, and her nieces Caitlin and Erin in Trenton, Ontario.
Born on a Canadian military base in Marville, France, Carol grew up in many various locations in both Europe and Canada, but Cape Breton would always be her home. Carol obtained her RN qualifications in nursing from Sydney City Hospital, whereby, after working for a time in Connecticut, she followed both her parents footsteps and proudly joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1991. She worked at military hospitals in both BC and Alberta before finding her true calling as an exceptional Air Evac nurse who amassed over 2000 flight hours not only with the RCAF, but also the United States Air Force - as an exchange officer in Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. She aided personnel worldwide from Uganda to Germany with dedication and compassion. Even with a busy schedule, Carol found the time to further her education and received her Bachelor of Nursing degree from Dalhousie University in 2005. Carol left her final posting at 426 Sqn in CFB Trenton, Ontario to move back to her beloved Cape Breton and retired in 2023 with 32 years of service.
Full of generosity and always wearing a smile, she had a love for baking, traveling, camping, and ice fishing. Carol was always up for a new adventure and could often be found doing so on her beautiful aqua blue Harley she named "Stella". May she be remembered for her kindness, her willingness to help others, and her strong love of family. Carol is one soul who will be greatly missed by many.
