Darlene was born to the late John and Verna Jenkins on January 1, 1947 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Darlene trained as an LPN in Saskatchewan and worked at various hospitals throughout the province but preferred the Northern area. It was here she met a young mountie from Cape Breton, Joseph Dennis. In 1973, she married Joseph and together they moved to Cape Breton. Three children joined their union and Darlene remained at home while raising them. In 1989 she went back to nursing, working at the Cove Guest Home. She was also an active member of the CAW, serving as president for a number of terms. Darlene retired from nursing in 2013 to again spend more time with family. As well as spending time with family, Darlene enjoyed a good book, a good glass of wine and a long walk.
Besides her parents she is predeceased by her brother Richard, sisters Kathy Burkart and Bonnie (Lew Tolley), nephew Brad and sister-in-law Karen Jenkins. Darlene is survived by her husband Joseph, her children Sheena (Don) Townsend, Jason (Cindy) and Jolene (David) Gray, grandchildren Connor, Sabrina, Lyla, Jessica and Kieran, brothers Garry, Kevin (Colleen), sisters Joan (David), Marla (Greg) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Palliative Care, VON nurses and outpatients for the wonderful care and attention shown to both Darlene and the family. If desired, donations in Darlene's memory may be made to the Cape Breton Hospice/Palliative Care.
