George Anthony Campbell

With love in our hearts and with great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, husband, and friend, George Anthony Campbell on January 6, 2016.

Born and raised in Sydney, George was the son of the late Alex and Catherine (MacPherson) Campbell. He was predeceased by brothers James and Joseph, sister-in-law Leone, and son-in-law Glen Moore.

A proud graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, George was an educator by profession. He was a former teacher at Sheriff Junior High School and an employee with the Department of Education – Adult Education for twenty five years until his retirement.

George was very community oriented and spent many years serving on the boards of the Sydney Credit Union, Cape Breton School of Crafts, Sydney Co-op Society, Sydney Daycare, and Cairdeil Place. He was a long-time member of Our Lady of Fatima parish where he enjoyed singing in the church choir under the direction of Patsy MacMullin. A life-long supporter of the NDP, George also had a passion for reading, politics, and discussing religious doctrine.

More than anything, George was defined by his love for his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Joan (MacGillivary), Sister Mary Campbell CND, brother John Hugh( Joyce) (London), son Bruce (Calgary), and daughters Patricia (Vince) MacCormack (Truro), Sharon Campbell (Halifax) and Diane (Ian) Wilkie (Halifax) and six beautiful grandchildren: Patrick and Matthew MacCormack, James and Natalie Campbell, and Catherine and Cameron Wilkie.

George’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Drs .Glen Worth and Ann Frances D’Intino and also to the wonderful staff of the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital..

There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 11 am on Saturday, January 9, 2016 with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or Canadian Diabetes Association.
