Heaven needed another Angel, so God sent for her.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Young, 80 of Eskasoni on Wednesday, June 12, 2019.
Gertie was born in Barra Head on August 29, 1938 to the late Annie Madeline (Gould) and Joseph Francis.
Gertie is survived by her children, Doreen, Madeline Micheal, Wekoqmaq; Robert (Michelle), Richard (Tonia), Roger, Terrance (Nancy), Roberta, Sydney, Joan (Brian), Veronica, Donald (Charmaine), Mary Theresa and foster children John W. and Janelle Bernard.
She was known as Grammy, Grandma and Mom 2, to her 35 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; whom she loved dearly.
She is also survived by her brother Andrew Mooney Francis (Pauline) and her sisters-in-law Mary Ellen Googoo, Membertou and Margaret Hodgeson, Ontario; her godsons, Edward Young and Edward Lewis and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Richard ‘Dickie’ Young; her son Anthony Daniel; three great grandchildren, sisters Mary Rose, Alice, Bernadette, Donna, Geraldine and brother Angus.
Gertie was a Residential School survivor. She enjoyed time with her friends Cathy and Jessica Lewis; playing cards and bingo.
We the family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Crosbie and staff at the Eskasoni Health Center and a special thanks to her caretaker and granddaughter Audrey Young.
Visitation for Gertie will start on Saturday, June 15 at 22 Richard Avenue, Eskasoni at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 17 at Holy Family Church at 10:30 am with Fr. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Holy Family parish cemetery, Eskasoni.
