It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Hazel Marie (Nolan) MacIntyre on February 23, 2025 at Mira Bay, Harbourstone Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay on February 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Charles (d. 1934) and Mary (Kennedy) Nolan (d. 2008).
Hazel is survived by her children Margaret, Sydney, Donald (Brenda), Dartmouth, Joe (Jeanette), Anne (Kevin) Everett and Duncan (Ann) all of Sydney, grandchildren Chris Gillis, Jarett Gillis, Jennifer Ginn, Andrew MacIntyre, Nicole Polegato, Melissa Withers, Lori Everett and 12 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sisters Theresa Southwell, Lorraine MacIntyre, Frances MacNeil, sisters-in-law Evelyn (Hughie) MacPherson, Mary MacIntyre, Belinda MacIntyre, Edna Warren, Louise Warren and Velma Warren and brother-in-law Joe (Theresa) MacIntyre and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband Donald A "Danny" MacIntyre (d. 1997), a son in infancy, her parents, stepfather James Warren of Glace Bay, sister Charlene, brothers Hector, Robert, Roy, Tommy and Billy Warren, brothers-in-law Michael "Jeep" Southwell, Michael MacNeil, Angus, Peter, Michael and Duncan "Paddy" MacIntyre, sisters-in-law Mary (Lawrence) Day, Kay (Charlie) Novak, Josephine, Ida and Rita MacIntyre.
A longtime resident of Ashby, Hazel was employed at the Sydney City Hospital for thirty years as a food supervisor where she met many lifelong friends. She was a devout member of St. Theresa's Parish where she served as Eucharistic Minister. Her hobbies included swimming, skating, skiing, quilting, gardening and of course daily walks with her dear friend Mary Levangie. Throughout much of their 43 years of marriage Mom and Dad enjoyed the company of good friends and Celtic music. They were both members of the Gaelic Society. Mom had an adventurous spirit, and was up for anything including roller coasters at age 71 and kayaking on the Mira at age 81. She enjoyed travelling and was fortunate enough to travel to Scotland, California, Expo '67, Disney, the Vatican, Hawaii, the Rockies and Las Vegas. Mom was a tireless, determined lady who dearly loved and supported her family her entire life. Following the untimely death of her father when she was 17 months old, Hazel and Theresa were raised by their grandparents, Robert and Agnes Kennedy. They were told to look after each other, which they took to heart and did for more than 90 years.
We would like to thank the staff of Mira Bay for the compassionate care our mother received during her 6 month stay.
Visitation for the late Hazel MacIntyre will take place at TW Curry Parkview Chapel on Friday, February 28, 12:15pm-2pm. Funeral at St. Theresa's Church, Sydney at 2pm, officiated by Father Norman MacPhee, Internment will be at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery.
