Ivan Macpherson Crowdis

12 March, 19302 May, 2020

It is with very heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our father, and grandfather on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at The Cove Guest Home.

Born on Mar 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Edward and Christine (MacPherson) Crowdis. Ivan will be remembered for his love of his wife and children, his upstanding character, love of animals, nature and Cape Breton. As a young man, he attended Sydney Academy and St.F.X. University's extension classes in Sydney before taking over Crowdis Auto Service from his father. “Whistle while you work” was his credo... Ivan enjoyed many years working closely with his son Kenneth at the garage and cherished recounting Cape Breton travels and stories with his friends and clients. He was very proud of the house he and Babe built on Kimberly Drive, where the door was always open to friends and neighbors ready to enjoy a good game of cribbage. An avid sports fan, Ivan could often be found cheering on the boys at their hockey games, or enjoying chinese food while watching a playoff game at home with the family. As the boys grew older, he was never too busy to give advice or role up his sleeves to help out with family 'construction projects'. A lover of the outdoors; together, he and Babe explored every inch of Cape Breton, hunting, fishing and camping.

Ivan is survived by his sons, Todd (Margaret) Sydney River, and William (Lynette), granddaughter Maclean, Halifax, daughter-in-law, Sylvia, granddaughter, Suzanne (Paul), great grandson Ephraim, Ottawa. Ivan was predeceased by wife, Rubena “Babe” (Thorne), sons, Kenneth, Allan, infant daughter, Jennifer Lynn, brother, Lloyd, and sister Norma. As per Ivan's wishes, there will be no Service.

The family would like to express special thanks to the caregivers of The Cove Guest Home. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of having him in their lives. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.twcurry.com.

Todd, so very sorry to read this morning about your dad's death. I met Ivan so many years ago on bringing my car to him at the suggestion of a friend. I met your mom on an extremely cold day on a ski hill. In my life experiences they stand out in my mind, a uniquely interesting, lovely and lovable pair. My very best to you and to Ivan's extended family.

Ivan was our mechanic for years and no matter what the problem, Ivan or his father before him had us back on the road in no time. Ivan was a kind and generous gentleman who always had time for a chat. We have fond memories him and a great appreciation for his ability. May he rest in peace.

Todd, sorry for your loss. I remember your Father coming to the store a few times and I guess it was either you and/or Kenneth who would be accompanying him. I also recall your Father taking a piece of the apple tree that was behind the store to graft to what I would assume was a tree in his yard. I hope it worked out? Anyway, I am sure you have lots of fond memories to get get you through this difficult time. Take good care.
Kindest regards

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your dad. Ivan and Rubena always shared a cup of tea and a smile at the kitchen table, and Ivan and Ken were a great duo in the garage. Ivan was always keen on doing research on a particular car part and getting the job done right.

Met Ivan at the Cove Guest Home last year and found him to be a true gentleman who would engage in conversation and enjoy the guest home activities. His obituary reflects the gentleman I met and a life well lived. RIP Ivan.

William, Todd and Family,

My deepest condolences on the passing of your Dad.

He was always very kind and welcoming during my numerous visits to Kimberly Drive.

Both he and your Mom were remarkably supportive (and patient) during the many hours William and I explored our musical ambitions.

They were clearly very proud of you all. And rightly so.

A life well lived, so lucky to have known Ivan, such a lovely person. Ivan was Kenneth and my ride to the forum during early hockey years something I never forgot. The best to Todd and Wil and family...
