Born in Listuguj, Quebec he was a son of the late Nicholas and Emily (Metallic) Sorbey.
Joseph was an avid fishermen, steelworker and lumberman. He worked hard his entire life and never left a job unfinished. He loved everyone and spoke many different languages, such as French, Mi kmaq, English, Gaelic, and Spanish. He picked up language easily and became friends with many people of different nationalities. He was a humble man, who respected everyone and believed that planet earth was home to all humans.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Katherine; granddaughter, Joni Simon, Moncton, NB; great grandson, Rain Simon, grandson, Jacob; brother, Edward of Florida; sisters, Elizabeth Sorbey (Margaret), Listuguj, QC and Vivian Sorbey Mitchell; nieces, Karen, Theresa, Gail and Carolyn; nephews, Audie, Galen, David, Timothy, Clinton and Darryl; step children, Madonna, Donna, and Douglas; numerous, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by daughter June Arsenault; son Clifford; sisters, Jenny and Florence Mitchell; brother, Myles, brother in law, Anthony Mitchell; sister in law, Nora and twin siblings at birth.
Visitation will begin at 2p.m. on Friday, July 15 at 4 Lawrence Paul Senior Awti, Membertou and continue until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 16 at Saint Anne’s Mission Church, Membertou. A second visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, July 18 with a service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19 both at Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro. A salite’ will be held at a later date at Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.
