Josephine Paul

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Josephine Paul on May 5, 2021 at 82 years of age. Josephine was the matriarch of our family, a kind thoughtful and generous woman, loving mother grandmother and great grandmother who never missed any family events. She had a strong catholic faith and was a member of the Eskasoni Prayer Group and was devoted to St. Anne, making the annual pilgrimage to St. Anne de Beaupre as well as the Chapel Island St. Anne Pilgrimage.

She is survived and will be missed by her husband of 58 years, Leonard Paul, dear children David Denny, Carol Ann, Arnold (Sandy), Miranda Bernard (Allison), Paula, Lenora (Vincent) and Robyn Googoo (Darren)(a granddaughter that she raised as her own). She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Adrienne (William), John Ross, Arnelle, Alissa, Angeline (Dale), Abby (Ian), Jolene (Jeff), Ashton, Arden, Taite, Vincent, Neylan, Kassie, Damaris and Denae, great grandchildren Korbin, Sebashton, Adreah, Jasper, Wastew, Owen, Brody, Lily-Jae, Shayna, Tace, Ian, Mark, Jayah, Emery, Ayslynn, Aryzona, Addison, Ashton, Anderson, Zscheile, Rye, Malik and Maris.

Josephine was the youngest of the 12 children born to the late Bridget & Richard Denny and is survived by her sister Virginia Googoo, foster brother Ernest Knockwood and daughter-in-law Veronica Denny. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Priscilla Denny, Elaine Denny, Brenda Googoo and Arlene Sylliboy who were like daughters to her, godchildren Wayne Sylliboy, Debbie Paul, Beverly Jeddore, Darlene Patles, Vera Denny, Norma Denny and Tecumseh Basque, best friends Maureen Sullivan (Quincy, Mass), Delores Sock (Elsipogtog, NB), Mary Lee Dennis, Theresa Sylliboy and Sylvia Denny.

She was predeceased by her daughter Arlene, son Peter Johnson, grandson Addison Bernard, siblings Matthew R, John R. , Martha Sylliboy, Noel R., Levi R., Joe R., Ellen, Tom Aloysius, Angeline Gould and Margaret Stevens, god children Bridget Ann Denny and Ashley Young, god mother Susan Poulette and best friend Miranda Gabriel.

Josephine was an active member of her faith, her community and worked as a tireless volunteer for community events and the church. She had a big heart and a love for everyone as evidenced by the large number of family and friends. Outside of her immediate family, she was thought of as mom by many.

Due to current covid restrictions, there will be no visitation or wake held. The funeral mass will be livestreamed via ETV and on the Eskasoni First Nation’s Facebook page starting at 10:30am on Monday, May 10. Josephine’s cremated remains will be interred in Holy Family Parish Cemetery at a later date.
