Katherine Elizabeth Fraser

Katherine was born on Dec.6, 1960, in Sackville, NB, and moved to Sydney in the spring of 1964. She showed an early interest in music, and took her first piano lessons from her mother Rosemary. She also took violin lessons and played percussion in the Sydney Schools Band. After attending Sydney Academy, she went on to graduate from Mount Allison University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance.

On her return to Sydney, she taught piano and music theory for many years, and was deeply involved with the Cape Breton Kiwanis Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. Katherine loved teaching, and also provided guidance and support to her pupils in many other ways, often long after they were no longer taking lessons. She was loved by her pupils. She worked as an examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music for many years, traveling all over Canada to examine.

As an organist and choir director, first in Westmount and Point Edward, serving 3 churches, and later at the Church of Christ the King, she provided musical direction to the parish, always with a sense of humor and great kindness.

Katherine loved the beaches of Cape Breton, and her ideal summer day involved a beach, a good book and a good meal at the end of the day (and, like the Queen Mother, a gin and tonic).

She is survived by her father, Peter Fraser, and her siblings Hugh, Margaret, Jamie and Jen (Laura). She was predeceased by her mother Rosemary Fraser.

The family is grateful to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, particularly the staff of 4A, the ICU and the Renal Dialysis Unit, for their care and kindness in Katherine's last few months.

The funeral service will be June 21st, at 2pm, at the Church of Christ the King, 19 Trinity Avenue, Sydney, NS. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family by visiting twcurry.com. Inurnment will take place in St. John's cemetery in Point Edward.
