It is with heavy hearts that the Prosper family announces the passing of Kenneth Michael Prosper (Kenny), 72, of Eskasoni, N.S., surrounded by his loving family on August 28, 2025, at his family home. Born in Sydney, N.S., he was the son of Bessie (Stevens) Prosper and the late Wilfred J. Prosper Sr., Eskasoni.
Kenny was a kind and gentle soul, always giving of his time and energy. He worked tirelessly as a Hospital Interpreter Liaison for Indigenous people throughout the Atlantic Region for many years. Well known for his infectious laugh, he cherished the company of family and friends. Kenny’s deep passion for the Mi’kmaw language carried forward the work his father began many years ago. His love for the language extended into a lifelong dedication to Mi’kmaw genealogy and historical research. He was a trusted resource for both language and history, and he greatly valued the wisdom of elders, often spending time with them to learn. Each summer, he
travelled to Mi’kmaw communities to continue his research and deepen his knowledge of history, language, and traditional medicines. He spent days and countless hours in old churches to find records, and finally at Nova Scotia archives; with his archival work, he connected many families with their family ancestry.
Although not much into sports, Kenny proudly supported the Toronto Maple Leafs, just as his father did. He enjoyed attending concerts, travelling, and celebrating culture wherever he went. He also loved to dance and had a deep appreciation for all kinds of music, often attending music festivals and concerts whenever he could. Kenny’s varied interests led him to become a proud member of the Gay Men's Chorus in Halifax, where he found his calling in his Elder years. For many years, Kenny dedicated his time and heart to supporting Mi’kmaw patients and families, ensuring they were heard, understood, and cared for with dignity. His work bridged language and culture in spaces where it mattered most, offering comfort and connection to those who often felt alone in unfamiliar surroundings.
In January, Kenny was honoured for his recent book launch — a project born from the work his father had begun many years earlier. Together, their dedication and over 20 years of research culminated in a Dictionary of the Mi’kmaw Language, a legacy Kenny was proud to bring forward. In June, he was again honoured during the Eskasoni Powwow by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, a recognition that meant a great deal to him. Kenny’s recognition stemmed from his involvement in regional and national 2SLGBTQIA+ activities. He attended the 2S International Gatherings in the Atlantic region, as well as 2S Elders meetings in Manitoba and San Francisco, USA, where he collaborated on research and knowledge development to address the well-being of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
He will be remembered not only for his lifelong dedication to the Mi’kmaw language but also for his service in other culturally related projects. He was a founding board member of the Wabanaki Two-Spirit Alliance, where he served as a Two-Spirit Elder. Kenny was also an Elder on the Mi’kmawey Debert Elders Advisory Council. Kenny was hugely recognized for his kindness, patience, and, of course, his legendary karaoke performances, and as a leader among the Mi’kmaw Nation. Kenny cherished his family and friends, taking great pride in each of them.
He will be deeply missed by his mother, Bessie; his sisters, Linda Battiste, Regina (Gerard) Johnson, Stella (Steve) Fraser, Vivian (Allan) Jeddore, Rita Gould, Ramona (Lloyd) Gould, Norma (Maurice) Denny, Mary (George) Paul, and Helen (Jay) Stevens; his brothers, Floyd (Dawna) Prosper and Anthony; his godchildren, John R., Kristen, Dexter, and Donovan; as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He was predeceased by his father, Wilfred J. Prosper Sr.; his brothers, Peter (Shirley), Wilfred Jr. (Laura), and Raymond (Valerie), Brother in law Billy Gould; his nephews, Jaret Johnson, Connor Fraser, Baby Wilfred Prosper; and his godparents, Leona Alex and Lawrence Paul.
Visitation for the late Kenny Prosper will begin on Thursday, September 4, at 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Center, 74 Gabriel Street, Eskasoni. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni, with Father Antolin Asor officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery.
