It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of Lawrence G. Somers at 87 years old. He was born to William Earnest and Mae (Hickey) Somers and was the last surviving member of his family. He was a husband of 67 years to Pauline (Lush), a father to daughters; Diane Moore, Gail Maloney, Kelly (Otis) MacNeil, Janet and Shirley, all of Sydney, and son Larry (Cindy) of Cole Harbour.

He was an uncle to many and a friend to all. Beside his parents he was predeceased by brothers Ernie, Connie and Gordon, sisters; Jackie and Joan MacLean, sons in law; Kenny Moore and Fred Maloney. He is survived by his children, eleven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He was a local business owner in the Sydney area for many years, these businesses included: Somers Refrigeration, Ashby Convenience, Mira Road Convenience and Ashby Laundromat. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus, ascending to rank of Grand Knight. He had a strong work ethic, which he instilled in his children, and would often say “never get old”. A phrase which he took to heart and showed through his passion for life and family.

Donations in his honor are to be made to the Heart & Stroke foundation. A public visitation will be held Wednesday, April 7th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A service will be held at St. Theresa’s Parish on Thursday April 8th at 11am with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating. Memories and condolences can be left for the family by visiting

Lawrence was a great man who would brighten your day when you would see him at the front desk at the londromat each time. He always asked about my husband and son and would always tell you stories to pass the time while you wait for your clothes to be washed.
