Lucille MacKenzie

7 January, 192419 April, 2021

It is with much sadness and broken hearts that the family of Lucille ‘Lou’ MacKenzie announces that she passed away peacefully on 19 April 2021 at the Palliative Care unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital. Born 7 Jan 1924 in Gillis Point, she was the daughter of Allan Austin and Sadie MacNeil. Loving mother to Austin ’Hoss’ (Cynthia), Stanley (Doris) Wpg, MB and Bob (Lori) Amaranth, MB. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband Johnnie, sisters Francis (Malcolm), Cecilia (Pat), Chrissy (Jim), Betty (John), Murdock ‘Buddy’ (Margie), Joseph (Edna), Stanley (Kaye). She was grandmother to Breigh, Kaley, Skye, Lana, Ainsley, Becky, and Stephen and great grandmother to Emrielle, Scarlett, and Louise. Lucille taught school from 1942 to 1947 in one room schoolhouses in St. Columba, Ottawa Brook, Estmere, and Beaver Cove. She then devoted her life to raising her family on the farm and spending time with her grandchildren. Lucille (Mama Lou) was the co-founder of the Highland Village Pipe Band, member of the Ladies Auxiliary Grandona Legion, and St. Columba CWL. Lucille was a faithful member of the St Barra's parish. Her faith in God was strong and carried her through the most difficult days before her passing. A full celebration of Life and reception will take place when the Canadian Borders re-open and Lucille's entire family can participate in the service. Future services are to be announced. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the wonderful Drs. at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital especially the nurses and hospice workers in the Palliative care unit, who took such wonderful care of Lucille and her family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lucille's name to the C.B. Regional Palliative Care unit or a charity of your choice. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting

Sending our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family as well as to Stanley and Bob and their families on the passing of your Mom. It was always a pleasure to meet up with Lou and have a chat. She was so warm and welcoming and interested in our lives and our families. She was so fortunate to be able to live out her long beautiful life at home with you and Cynthia and you were so fortunate to have her in your lives for so many years. Love to all.

Heartfelt condolences to all of Lucille's family. Lucille was a wonderful woman, always sharing her ready smile and friendly demeanour. My earliest remembrance, and that is a long time ago, is her giving me Goldilocks and the Three Bears which I treasured for years. I will miss seeing her at church in Iona. In early days, sitting a few pews behind our family, always so dignified and in the summer when her sisters came home, there was such a feeling of togetherness. Lucille will be greatly missed by the community.

I have a fond (and scary) memory of Lou. They came to visit Hoss & Heather & the girls in Whitehorse . Hoss et al being my adopted family, we were quickly included in card night. Joan Delong and I loved our card games with your parents but my foul mouth was always an issue on whether or not I could rein in my emotions. Your mother, I fully believed warned of this, would do everything in her strict schoolmarm way (with a glint in her eye)to get me to cuss. Bless her heart & God rest her soul.
