We regret to announce the passing of Michael Currie on December 2, 2021 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 20, 1931, Michael was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was employed with the Sydney Steel Corp. for many years until his retirement in 1991. Michael and his wife Rhodena of 60 years built a life together and raised nine children in MacAdams Lake. There were many adventures such as spending summers camping in Margaree, harnessing the horse for sleigh and buggy rides, playing horsehoes with friends and family and attending Scottish concerts. Michael enjoyed square dancing, celtic entertainment, playing tarabish and crib. He instilled the love of Scottish music and dance in his children and grandchildren, often prompting them to play an instrument or step dance. At family gatherings he would often be heard playing the harmonica. Michael played many practical jokes and always loved to hear a good story and tell a good joke. He was fluent in the Gaelic language and enjoyed spending time conversing and singing in Gaelic with his siblings and friends. While living at the Northside Guest Home during covid with visitor restrictions in place, he mastered navigating YouTube at 90 years old and was able to access a variety of entertainment. He also enjoyed going for scenic drives around Cape Breton.
Michael was the son of the late Dougal A. and Effie Belle (Harrietha) Currie. He was predeceased by his loving wife Rhodena. He is survived by his children Michael Charles, Wayne (Paula), Donald, Mary (Kurt Campbell), Chrissy (Dean Abbass), Gerard (Helen), Jane (Jeff Mosher), Joanne (Terry Gracie), Cynthia (Glenn Fraser), grandchildren Michael James, Rory, Leah, Darlene, Denise, Derek, Dana, Megan, Nicole, Michelle, Angela, Breagh, Jeris, Devin, Robin, Stephanie, Josh, Nathan, Holly, Monica, Lindsey, Shanon, Brandon, Randhall and nineteen great grandchildren; his siblings Jimmy (Shirley), John Lauchie (Lizzie), Cecilia Gosbee, sisters-in-law Peggy, Theresa, Mary-Jeanette Bennett, Christena (Victor MacDonald), Gabriella and brother-in-law Archie Fraser. Da will always be rembered for his many sayings; “thank you for your visit”, “proceed with caution” and especially one he created while playing tarabish: “now that’s playing with scavinity”…our interpretation of this saying is a combination of skill and divine intervention.
