Sydney
We are sad to announce the tragic passing of Roger Lynn Stoddard on Friday Feb. 9, 2018 at 64 years of age.
On Tuesday evening, the Fisherman’s Provider II ran aground just off the coast of Canso. Roger made the decision to stay aboard the ship when his crew departed and he was reported missing shortly after.
Roger spent his entire life working and fishing on the sea and he was truly happiest out on the water. The sea was in his blood.
Roger is survived and will be missed by his family, children Douglas, Sandie, Cody, Joni and stepson Kenneth, grandchildren Kaylen, Brendan, Justin, Catlyn, Kenzie, Caileigh, Courtney and Jessica, great grandchildren Charlee and Ryder as well as his brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews and his friends and family in the fishing community.
Roger was predeceased by his daughter Joline, mother Sheila (Brannen), father Herbert Newell, and step father Gerald Stoddard.
Our sincerest gratitude goes out to the fishers in Canso and the community as a whole, for their efforts and to the Canadian Coast Guard and members of the Joint Task Force Atlantic who responded to the distress signal and provided support.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 17 from 12:00 – 2:00 with a funeral starting at 2pm all from TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George Street, Sydney. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.twcurry.com
