We regret to announce the death of Dr. S. Affias, a resident of Sydney who was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Doctor Affias received his education in Israel, Europe, the United States, and Canada; and he practiced medicine in New York City before traveling to Canada to continue his studies, specializing in Microbiology/Infectious diseases in Halifax.
On completion of his studies and practicum at the QEII Healthcare Complex, Pathology Laboratory, Doctor Affias accepted the Microbiologist position at the former Sydney City Hospital. His duties and responsibilities as the Chief Microbiologist soon grew to include the Sydney City, St. Rita’s Hospital, as well as all of the other Regional Complex facilities. Doctor Affias was a leader in the area of Clinical Microbiology and Infection Control & Prevention, and he was always on the cutting edge of his field. He was instrumental in developing many of the infection control/prevention practices and protocols that are still in place today, as well as improving and expanding laboratory procedures especially in the field of Microbiology.
During his medical career, Doctor Affias was a member of many provincial, national and international committees related to Clinical Microbiology and Infection Control/Prevention. On many occasions, their work was focused on developing and implementing new international protocols related to antibiotic-resistant microorganisms (ARO) and other emerging pathogens. Their work in this field was world-leading, often resulting in new operating procedures and best practices as all healthcare facilities were dealing with these emerging issues.
Doctor Affias was always an example of dedication and professionalism, especially when it came to his patients. He was often brought in as a consultant to assist in providing medical care for some of the most severely-ill patients who, many times, were in the intensive care unit. As a medical professional, he worked tirelessly and strived to provide the best possible medical treatments for each and every individual who was fortunate enough to be under his care. It was well known that he expected nothing less than their best from his colleagues and staff when it came to patient care and positive outcomes for his patients.
Doctor Affias was a life-long learner who promoted continuing education throughout his career. He himself would continue to ensure his knowledge was at the highest level in his field by constantly upgrading his education through all opportunities available, often traveling to attend conferences and courses in other cities and countries. This was a practice he continued even after his retirement as he achieved a Business Administration Degree in his spare time. As well, one of his passions outside of medicine was computer science which was another field where he continued to improve his knowledge and education.
Doctor Affias was a very intelligent individual with extensive knowledge in many areas including medicine and infectious diseases. He was a medical professional who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all Cape Bretoners and Nova Scotians alike. Those who truly knew this man were very lucky indeed, and were perhaps better individuals for having the experience. Cape Breton has been truly fortunate that Doctor Affias decided to make Cape Breton his home.
Cremation has taken place and no visitation or funeral service will be held at this time.
