It is with utmost sadness that we announce the passing of Walter (Lully) Connell, age 75, of Sydney, Nova Scotia, who died peacefully on Sunday, November 21, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Born February 5, 1946, Walter was predeceased by his parents, Clayton and Geraldine (Nash) and sister Maureen Collins.
He is survived by his sons Greg (Jillian) of Sydney and Brent of Inuvik. He is also survived by the joys of his life, his two grandchildren, Parker Connell (Inuvik) and Amelia Connell (Sydney).
In his younger years Walter had a passion for muscle cars, specifically corvettes. Later he developed a love of harness racing, for which he travelled around the Maritimes as both a fan and owner. In the summers, Walter could be found soaking up the sun at many of the beautiful beaches on the island, or at the field watching his sons play baseball. In the winter months, he was often found at hockey rinks throughout the province with his two boys.
After StFX Junior College, Walter ventured off to Hamilton, Ontario, where got his start in the steel industry before returning to Cape Breton and working at Sydney Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1998. Not being able to sit still, Walter thoroughly enjoyed the last 16 years working as a valued member of the Ben Eoin Beach Campground family.
Walter was not one to shy away from conversation and was a man of many stories and made friends wherever he went. He wished to express a special thanks to friends Tom and Darlene, Bill and Diane and Corinne for their love and continued support over the years.
A very heartfelt thank you to the incredible doctors and staff of the QE2, specifically the 4.1 unit, who showed a great deal of compassion, empathy, and professionalism during such a difficult time with special recognition to Dr. Lee (Halifax) and Dr. MacKillop (Sydney).
Visitation will be held at TW Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney on Friday, Nov. 26 from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 1pm at TW Curry Parkview Chapel with Fr.
