We the family of Zana (Al Khouri) Shaheen announce the passing of our mother and sister on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the age of 87 years.
Born in Damascus, Syria, the daughter of the late Saleem and Afife Al-Kouri. She married Charles Shaheen in 1955 and came to Canada taking up residence in Sydney.
Survived by her brother Mahfouz Al-Kouri (Lina) and two daughters Mary Shaheen-Burgess (Christopher) and Zana Hunneh-Shaheen. She has three grandchildren Nicholas Annesty (Kelly), Kouri Annesty and Sarah Burgess and one great grandchild Ethan Annesty. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by seven of her siblings in Syria and by her son Edward Shaheen and grandson David Burgess.
Zana was one of the first to sell Syrian bread and fatayer to support herself and her children after her husband passed away. Her food was well known throughout the community. She stayed active helping her daughter at Zana’s Diner and enjoyed interacting with the public. She also enjoyed bowling, shuffle board, gardening and fishing.
Visitation will take place from 6-9 pm on Thursday, April 5 at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Reception to follow in church foyer. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
