

Maurice H. (Sonny) Salloway, of Sylacauga, Alabama passed away on September 6th 2010. He was born March 5, 1920 in Peabody. Massachusetts. He graduated from Peabody High School, Boston University and Pratt Institute in New York City. He was a proud veteran of World War II. After the war, he owned and operated The Fair Store, Sonny’s Bargain Store and The Budget Shoe Store in Childersburg, Alabama for 40 years. When he retired from retail in 1985, he began working with his son in business at Ronnie Salloway and Company in Sylacauga, Alabama. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was beloved and respected by his family, friends and business associates.He was married to the late Margaret Goldberg Salloway of Sylacauga, Alabama. He is survived by his two children, son, Ronnie Salloway (wife, Karen) of Sylacauga, Alabama; daughter, Dr. Shirley Salloway Kahn (husband, Dr. Donald Kahn) of Mountain Brook, Alabama; four grandchildren, Meredith Salloway Kacavich (husband, Kevin) of Natick, Massachusetts; Michael Salloway of New York; Alex Kahn and Mitchell Kahn of Mountain Brook, Alabama.Mr. Salloway was involved in numerous business and civic organizations and served as a past president of the Childersburg Chamber of Commerce; Kiwanis Club of Childersburg and a member of the Sylacauga Country Club. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was a member of Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham.He dedicated his life to his family and community and he enriched those who knew him with his love for life and wonderful sense of humor.We acknowledge his caretakers with special love and appreciation to Ms. Addie Heard, Ms. Nell Williamson, Ms. Maggie Evans and Mr. Robert Heard for their dedication and devotion.A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, September 10, 2010. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, September 9, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Radney Smith Chapel in Sylacauga, Alabama.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Maurice H. and Margaret G. Salloway Legacy Fund at Temple Emanu-El, 2100 Highland Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.
