Sammy was born on January 8, 1982, to Stephen and Sandra Simmons. Sammy joined the Marine Corps after graduating Childersburg High School, class of 2000. He had a decorated career during which he earned multiple honors and completed several tours of duty. He retired after 20 years at the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
Sammy leaves behind his parents Steve (Jackie) Simmons and Sandra (Linda Taylor) Simmons, his children Steven Simmons and Kirey (“bear”) Simmons, his sister Angel (Stephen) Scoggins, his wife Jessi Simmons, the mother of his children Candi Nicole, and multiple family members who think he hung the moon (including nieces Onika Scoggins and Chloe Mizzell). He is preceded in death by his brother from another mother, James Crosby, and a best friend and cousin, Brian Ogle.
Sammy was exceptionally intelligent and quick-witted. He lived his whole life with an adventurous spirit. He was adored and respected by many. Simple things in life brought Sammy joy. He loved reading, kayaking, camping, collecting things (especially video games), and music. He was most happy playing outdoor games with his children (like Frisbee-golf or tennis) or teasing those he loved the most.
Sammy was a bright light and his loss will be felt forever. We will all do our best to live each day to the fullest, and enjoy the best parts of childhood well into our adulthood just as he did.
“There goes my hero, watch him as he goes.”
