

Mr. William P. Verstraete, age 81 of Sylacauga, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018 at Sylacauga Health and Rehab. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel with Father Shoban Singareddy officiating. Visitation will be for 10-11 AM prior to the service.
Mr. Verstraete is survived by nieces, Debra Hornsby of Sylacauga and Vicki (Mike) Irvin of New Jersey; Nephew, Gary Smith of Sylacauga.
Mr. Verstraete is preceded in death by his wife, Leona Faye Hornsby Verstraete; Brother, Cyril Verstraete. Mr. Verstraete was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Alma Van Leuven Verstraete and Cyril Verstraete. Mr. Verstraete met Faye his future wife in 1983 when he moved to St. Croix, USVI to begin teaching there. They married in 1991. Bill was a Brother with the Brothers of Holy Cross, Notre Dame, IN. until April 1991 when he left the brotherhood to marry Faye. Together they enjoyed life, traveling to every country except two. He has friends scattered all over the world. Several have said it was because of Bill that they remained in school and graduated, many going on to college. He had a big heart and lots of love to give and he was always helping someone in need. Mr. Verstraete was in Education for 36 years; 21 years in Counseling and Administration. He taught school in Terre Haute IN, Macon Michigan, Akron Ohio, Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil and St. Croix, USVI. He received many awards over the years, including Presidential Award.

Employees of Sylacauga Health and Rehab who helped make his last days comfortable, Dr. Clay Davis and Staff, Dr. Mark Bridges and staff of Hematology and Oncology, and Dr. Bashar Hakim and staff.
