Dear Edna  I just read Gunthers obituary.Belated hugs and sympathy to you and family.  Murray loved you nd Gunther his best friends,   I here in DC.  Mrray passed away a few years ago after a long illness.  Aliisonour daughter passed away after a  heart transplant.  I live near Lisa and my grand children and am doing all right.  So sorry about this belated note and hope you and family are well  Carolyn Levine May 2025

I rowed with Gunther at the Sagamore Rowing Association.  I saw him as a leader and always felt privileged to be in his company.  I was looking forward to more rowing brunches with him.  If I get back to that scene, I'll imagine him there. 

Gunther was a true inspiration to all of us at Sagamore Rowing. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him and I will always remember his smile and his great spirit. What an amazing man! He will be deeply missed. 

Our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to your family 💐. We truly loved Gunther. His spirit, his smile, and his generally upbeat way no matter what will be truly missed and remain in our hearts. The metronome of his stroke will be missed but heard forever in our heads. We were all blessed to have him in our midst.

My first memory of Gunther was his welcoming smile when I joined the club. Of course my boat launched itself from the dock at that moment on a stiff breeze and I had to jump in the bay to rescue it but came out dripping wet and sheepishly shook his hand. He clapped me on the shoulder and said " It is after all - a water sport" !

Gunther has always made everyone feel welcome at the club and would take newcomers under his wing and out in the 4x so they could learn from the more seasoned rowers. I will miss seeing him out stroking the men's  quad - 4x a week to the end of the creek and back in Oyster Bay wrapping up Thursday rows with pizza and a cold brew with his fellow oarsmen and women.  

He was a mentor to me with his knack for fixing boats and constructing handy  conveyances to ease the burden of carrying boats to the water.  He patiently taught me how to restore 2 of the older boats starting with stripping and sanding and progressing to  fixing  broken ribs and re - decking. 

To sum it up - it still all comes back to that welcoming smile.
