Cousin Peter was a man with such a big heart and a beautiful smile which I will never forget. I have fond memories when coming to syracuse and going to Peter's home and having good times with all my cousins. Those memories will always have a special place in my heart. Since I am not in Syracuse, I want to use this space to express my love for father-in-law and our lovely family. The first time I met Joe's dad, he greeted us at the top of the stairs with his arms open for a hug and an Italian kiss, with eyes moistened by tears. There were lots of kisses on that first encounter with the Pallottas. Joe - you could have warned a girl. We don't do so much of that in my less-than-ethnic family. On our way out to go home from that trip, it was more of the same - hugging, kissing, & Pete with wet eyes. You see, you always knew where you stood with Pete - and if you were family (or future family) - you were on the top rung of the ladder.  Actually, you were treated like royalty. Pete even called me 'King' instead of Kim. (I know it was Denise's dog's name, but I just ignore that part of the story.) Everyone else would try to correct him, but I secretly relished that slip of the tongue. And Pete, well, he didn't get caught up in details. 
When you visit for a week or so like Joe & I do on vacation, you're prone to hearing a Pete story from the rocking chair. He loved to talk, not so much concerned with listening, but so what?  That was Pete. By the time we would leave, it was possible to have heard the same story a couple or twenty times. That was Pete, too. I loved when he would talk about Italy.  There was one story I don't think I ever really got to hear, no matter how many times Pete would start it. It was something about a group of his friends and Pete doing some travelling in Italy. They all had to stay together in one room or something. I'm not really sure because he would always start cracking himself up at the memory. He'd get to laughing and then forget about finishing the tale. He was a great laugher when he did it and would always end up with teary eyes. 
The best really was when Pete would talk about being in Italy. You see, he would be in his rocking chair in the living room.  He would grab each arm of the chair with his elbows sticking up, close his eyes, take a deep breath all the way up from his toes, and hold it, hold it, hold it. You could see just by looking at him that he was no longer in the living room at Noble Ave in Syracuse, NY. He was breathing in the fresh country air of his Italy. It was just for a minute, but he was there. If you closed your eyes, he would take you along, too. Then, he would curl his fingers together and press them against his lips to deliver a kiss of satisfaction. He always had the same expression on his face when he took in the breath of Italy. It is my absolute favorite way to remember my most loving father-in-law. 
To be sure, Pete saw things the way he wanted them to be. In his world, everyone was happy, family was number one. He didn't understand conflict, so to him, it didn't exist. He just didn't have time for it. Family is everything. Everything. Period. No question about it. 
Pete lived his life on his terms. They were good terms for him. He loved his wife, he loved his children, he loved his grandchildren, he loved his siblings and their children. He loved his family and if you were his friend, that made you family. With that much love in his heart, what a great life he led. I aspire to take this page from his book.
Well Pete, now you don't have to transport yourself to Italy through your memories. You can go get a breath of Italy any time you want. And now, you can go with family you haven't seen for a long time. Give them all a Pete hug and kiss for me. I'll dry your eyes next time I see you.

I was so sorry to hear about your husband and father.  One of my fondest memories after college was spending a Sunday dinner at your home, enjoying your company and some of your father's good wine.  You have a wonderful family.  Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
