Annabelle Chastain Cole was born in Abilene Texas on September 9th, 1930 to John Chastain and Ethel May Jarvis Chastain. She had two brothers and two sisters, Wretha Bea Brown of California, John Chastain of Tulsa Oklahoma, Mary Lou Floyd of Ponca City Oklahoma, all deceased and James Chastain of Bartlesville Oklahoma.
Her mother was killed saving her son from being hit by a drunk driver while walking home from the store in Ontario California when she was 9 years old. The family then moved back to Tahlequah Oklahoma where the children were raised by their grandparents. She graduated in 1948 from Bagley High School in Tahlequah and began attending classes at Northeastern State College studying business management. She met Rothel Cole at the Tahlequah movie theater where he was working as a projectionist and usher. They married on December 23rd, 1951 and had two children David and six years later Susan. After returning from the military Rothel managed an electrical contracting company in Tulsa and Annabelle used her skills from college as his secretary/bookkeeper until his death in 1970. When her son started his own electrical contracting business she pulled up her sleeves and helped him as his office manager from 1983 until she retired in 2012. In her free time she loved to craft and would set up a booth with a close friend at local craft fairs to sell her crocheting jewelry and sewing. She was a huge fan of the Grand Ole Opry and had a large library of western novels, collecting as many Louis L’Amour books as she could find. She was a collector of bird figurines as many family and friends know. They are in every corner of her home and she knew where and when she acquired every one. She loved to watch John Wayne westerns and there was always the long lunch so she could catch up on “her stories”
Sunday dinner was always a special time at her house. She would host family and friends, always ready to add a plate for any unexpected visitors, catch up on the week’s news and events and enjoyed everybody’s company. She even came up with a special birthday cake, “Chocolate Shortcake” which everyone had to have for their birthday, sometimes with “The Train” and candles on top.
She loved to attend family get together and organized a family cookbook for one of the large family reunions, and usually volunteering to help organize her high school reunions and parades.
She was determined, smart and very quick on her feet and happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren and family. She had a quick smile and friendly face that everyone she met enjoyed.
Her health began to fail her and she passed from this life on January 7th 2015 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 84. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family.
Annabelle is preceded in death by her parents, John Chastain and Ethel May Jarvis Chastain, her husband Rothel Cole, her sisters Wretha Bea Brown and Mary Lou Floyd and brother John Oliver Chastain.
