Darlene Yvonne Cookson was born in Lostwood, North Dakota on April 25, 1937; the daughter of Adolph and Melvina (Westby) Anderson. She was raised alongside her three siblings, Vern, Rick and Arlys. Those early years helped shape the strong values of family, faith, and hard work that she carried throughout her life.
Darlene earned her teaching degree from Minot State Teachers College in North Dakota and began her career as a 4th grade elementary school teacher. She had a natural gift for nurturing young minds and instilling kindness and curiosity in her students. After marrying her beloved husband, Sonny Cookson, she embraced her most cherished role as a mother to their two children, Jeff and Darla. Darlene later devoted herself fully to her family as a homemaker, creating a warm and loving home filled with care and tradition. She was especially known for her homemade pies—crafted in a wide variety of flavors and baked with care in her beautiful and intricate pie pans. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, joy, and togetherness.
Darlene had a love for travel and treasured many adventures throughout her life, with a special place in her heart for her trip to Israel. Later in life, she found joy in square dancing, embracing new experiences with her characteristic enthusiasm. Although, her greatest joy came from time spent with her grandchildren. She treasured one-on-one outings, day trips, and special summer memories, often taking them to Vacation Bible School. While most knew her as Grandma, her granddaughter Kristen lovingly called her “Granny,” a name that reflected their unique bond.
Darlene was a woman of faith, dedicated to the Lord, exemplifying kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. On March 7, 2026, Darlene was called to her eternal rest at the age of 88 years old. She will be remembered for her sweet smile, her gentle spirit, and the countless ways she touched the lives of those around her.
