George Albert Garrett, 84, of Tahlequah, passed away March, 2nd, 2015 in Tahlequah, OK. George was born November 15, 1930, to the late George Dewey and Ethel Jones Garrett. He attended schools in Cherokee County and Tahlequah. Due to the economic times, George left school at age 16 and joined the US Army. When it was discovered that he was only 16 and did not have parent permission, he was sent home. He talked his mother into giving her permission for him to join the United State Air Force. This was the beginning of a 23-year career serving his country. He married Bonnie Jean Tudor on July 3, 1952. His career took them to military bases all over the world. He and Bonnie raised 5 children during these years. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, they settled permanently in Tahlequah in 1970. He returned to school at this time, graduating from Northeastern State University in 1973. He began teaching at Briggs School and continued until his retirement. George and Bonnie owned and operated Diamond G Kennel at their home in Briggs. They loved caring for their dogs and placed them in homes all over the country. George and Bonnie moved to Muskogee in 2001. As their health deteriorated, they moved into Dogwood Creek. Bonnie preceded George in death on November 15, 2011. George moved into Go Ye Village in February of 2014. George’s family was very important to him, as was his military career and his years of teaching.
George is survived by two sons, Mike Garrett of Tahlequah and Terry Garrett and wife Connie of Tahlequah; one daughter-in-law Rachel Garrett of Washington, DC. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Jodi and Brian Congiardo, Crystal and Kirk Tomlinson, Shelby and Sam Cushman, Lori and Danny Cushman, Chris and Andrea Garrett, Brandon and Stacy Garrett, Amy and Robert Gilliam, Alan Garrett, Benjamin Garrett, Nathaniel Garrett, Sandra and Hugo Siegel and Andrea and Alex Cantatore. He also leaves his great grandchildren, Elseah, Eli, Olivia, Claire, Charlotte, Hadley, Mabrie, Lathan, MaKenzie, Oakley and great great granddaughter Ryleigh. George had three brothers, Grant Somner, Gale Somner and Henry Garrett, and three sisters, Hattie Smith, Arlene Bash and Wilma Bash, and one brother-in-law Junior Tudor, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
George was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, his parents, his daughter Cassie Goodwin in 1995, son George “Dee” Garrett in 2009, son Rod Garrett in 2014, and son-in-law Dennis Goodwin in 2010.
The family would like to give special thanks to the J.F. Porter Special Care unit and staff at Go Ye Village and the staff at Hope Hospice for their exceptional care of George during this last year.
