Jimmie Reece Cookson was born on February 11th, 1930 in Qualls, OK, the son of Reece “Mack” and Katherine “Kate” (Risenhoover) Cookson. He was raised with one brother and three sisters, Sanford, Betty, Mary and Thelma. He attended several schools in the area including Stone Chapel and White Oak, and the hardship stories of growing up during those times would always be told with a laugh. He met and married Patti Gail Gladd on August 23rd, 1965. Together they would raise two sons, Reece Lowrey and Ronnie Joe. He earned his living as a welder, working for large companies and ultimately himself. He has built miles of pipe fence and could fix anything the boys or a local rancher had torn up. Jimmie enjoyed raising cattle, and thoroughbred race horses, with wife Patti. He was content to enjoy the world view from the back of the welding truck or the stall of a horse racing track. When he had a little down time at home, he was watching Gunsmoke, Hee Haw, Marty Stewart, an old western, the price is right, rodeo or bull riding. He also really enjoyed the fellowship at the Tahlequah sale barn on Saturdays to exchange a little news and a joke or two with the guys. He was easy going and had a contagious laugh. He was a great husband for 50 years, a great father, and he truly did enjoy the time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He passed from this life on September 9th, 2021. He was 91 years old.
Jimmie is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph Jack and Eliza (Pettit) Cookson, his mother and father, his brother and two sisters, Sanford Cookson, Mary Novak, and Thelma Powers, and his wife, Patti Cookson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Reece Cookson and Lisa Brickey of Park Hill, OK, and Ronnie Cookson and wife Jane Ziegler of Tulsa, OK. He leaves one sister, Betty Lawley of Sand Springs, OK. He will live on in four granddaughters, Mandy Cookson of Tulsa, OK, Sarah Cookson and Marshall Tucker of Tahlequah, OK, Brooklynn Colburn and husband Jordan of Tahlequah, OK, and Hannah Cookson also of Tahlequah. He also leaves three great grandchildren, soon to be four, Natalie Qualls, Evelynn Tucker and Canyon Colburn, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones too numerous to mention. He will be greatly missed.
