Doris thoroughly enjoyed traveling and looked forward to planning each adventure. She appreciated the time that she spent at Carrabelle beach and was very proud of their Carrabelle beach house, where shoes were seldom found on her feet. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. It brought her happiness to crochet an edging around baby blankets that the church donated to those less fortunate. She carefully chose the color of the thread for each blanket to ensure that it would look its best.
You could often find her at the card table with her sisters, family members or her good friend Dot, playing a game of rummy and telling stories. Her stories were plentiful; telling the antics of family members in days gone by, evenings of her and James attending dances, challenges they endured, history within Tallahassee, etc… there was always conversation to be had.
She was an avid FSU fan that attended many football games. Once she was physically unable to attend, she was sure to find out what channel the game would be televised on so that she could still be in attendance. Time spent with her family and friends was very precious to her.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was actively involved in the UMC. Doris and her two sisters had an unbelievable bond. They could always be found “the three sisters” attending church in the same pew each Sunday. She worked for the State of Florida for many years before doing her true passion, being a stay-at-home mom.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, James E. Maige; her daughter, Susan Maige Sparks; her two sisters, (her best friends) Margaret Gordy and Irene Todd; two nieces, Karen Gordy Gerrell and Linda Gordy Cooksey as well as Glenda - Richard Todd’s wife.
Survivors include her son, James E. Maige, Jr. (Jimmy) and wife, Beth; granddaughter, Jamie Maige Sellars; grandson, Austin J. Maige; two great grandchildren, Konnor Sellars and Jacob Sellars; nephews, Wayne Todd (Ann), Richard Todd and Philip Todd (Carol); and a number of great nieces and nephews; as well as many great-great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1pm - 2pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 120 W Park Ave with funeral services beginning at 2pm. Burial at Oakland Cemetery, 838 N. Bronough Street will follow.
