

Dr. Frederick Henry Gareau died unexpectedly Friday afternoon, January 10, 2014. Born to Kasper and Hildegarde Gareau on February 19, 1923, he grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and received a degree in economics at the University of Toledo. While in Toledo, he worked for Willys Overland and Libby Owens Glass. During World War II, he served as a corpsman in the Marine Corps. While a graduate student, he taught economics at the University of Toledo. He subsequently received the equivalent of a Masters degree in International Relations at the Université de Genève, in Geneva, Switzerland, and finally received his doctorate at the American University, Washington, D.C. While working on his doctorate, he served as a Labor Economist with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, then subsequently worked for the Air Force Intelligence.After receiving his degree, he became a professor of political science at the University of Mississippi, which he helped integrate by actively supporting his student, James Meredith. In 1963, he transferred to Florida State University, where he taught International Relations. He also taught in Panamà, England, and Italy.He travelled abroad extensively, spoke several languages, and was greatly influenced by his travels in Brazil with his lovely Brazilian wife, Edna. Since his retirement he has published several books and was working on one on terrorism at the time of his death.Fred will be remembered for his passionate championship of the downtrodden and the underprivileged. But most of all, he will be remembered for being a loving husband, a doting father, and a loyal and good friend.When at the grocery store or any public event, he loved to engage in conversation with anyone in his presence. He was fascinated by people of all cultures and wanted to know their story. He was charming, gentle, open-hearted and often displayed a terrific sense of humor. Fred was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Florence Gareau, his brother, John Gareau, and his son, Karl Gareau.Surviving him are his loving wife, Edna Cecilia Gareau, his dear daughter, Marguerite Jeanne Gareau, a host of wonderful friends, a cousin, Denis Eble (Carol) and many nieces and nephews, including Julie Gareau, Donna Brock (Jeff), Dennis Gareau (Michelle), Andrew P. Shepherd, John Gareau (Susie), Andrew J. Shepherd, Nicole Shepherd, Austin Gareau, Dottie Masakowski, Richard Gareau, Patrick Gareau, Jason Masakowski, Sandra Ramon, Kathleen Gareau Gillespie, and several others. A visitation will be held at Culley's Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, on Thursday, January 16, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The funeral service will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 624 Miccosukee Road, at ll:00 A.M., Friday, January 17.
