Born in Atlanta, he was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy), attended Georgia Tech for one year, and then obtained a commission to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1946. An engineer for most of his working life, a point of pride was his civilian training in the Naval Reactor Facility Training Program in the latter 1950s, later working on early generation nuclear submarines in Groton, Connecticut and Charleston, South Carolina. Work in his later years in the 1980s included stints at numerous power plants in the United States, Mexico, and Spain.
Hap married fellow Atlantan Mary Mell Fleming in 1957. Their life together took them to Indiana, Idaho, California, Connecticut, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. He loved sacred music, participating in choirs at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston, North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, and Faith Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee; he also was an active blood donor, donating at least 20 gallons of blood in middle age and beyond. Of course, making and sending his Christmas season pralines was a particular joy for him and many others.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Mell Fleming Walker; his son, Daniel Fleming Walker; nephews Herbert Leeming and Joel Andrew Fleming; and, nieces Nancy Walker, Andrea Britt, and Ellyn Bradford. Predeceasing him were his mother, Mary; his sister, Doris Leeming; and his brother, Bob Walker.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 700 Timberland Road, in Tallahassee.
