

She was born and raised in Tallahassee. She graduated from Leon High School with the class of 1959 and was elected Homecoming Queen that year. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Home Economics from FSU and taught school in Florida, Tennessee and California.
In 1982, she married William Douglas Hemmeter. His maritime job took them to duty stations in Maryland, Canada, California and ultimately Houston, Texas. During most of their 24 years in Houston, she worked as an administrative assistant in an engineering firm. In 2013, she and Doug moved back to Tallahassee.
Mary Lillian was a member of First Baptist Church and served in the First Joy Choir and the Empty Nesters Bible Study Class. She was a committed follower of Jesus Christ. She was a member of Ivy-Daisy Garden Circle. She will be remembered for her wonderful smile and loving spirit to all. She was a huge personality in a tiny package.
She is survived by her husband of forty-three years, Doug, and two nephews: Al Jones of Tallahassee (wife E.G.) and Andy Jones of Atlanta.
A celebration of life for Mary will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, Tallahassee.
