  As you stepdaughter I watched you bring over twenty years of happiness to my Mom.  Merle was a a great addition to our family.  There are many fond memories that my family and I will be able to recount in the years to come.  I will miss you.

Our friendship with Merle began over 50 years ago.  This bond was close enough that we named our youngest son after him.  For the last 30 years we seldom saw him, but had frequent telephone conversations.  Those phone "chit chats" will be sorely missed.  We have experienced the loss of a dear friend.

Carolyn, we are sorry for the loss of your life's companion.  May God bless you and comfort you.

I first met Merle before he became a supervisor at the Dept of Corrections in the probation office in Jacksonville.  He was always a gentleman and respected by his co-workers.  As he moved to Tallahassee to further his career I know he treated everyone with the same respect he had always been known to exhibit.  I would like to offer my condolences to all of his immediate and extended family.

Merle, a gifted communicator, intelligent, witty, and generous who treated all people with respect.  If anyone needed help in the criminal justice system, he was the person to call for quick answers and any assistance he could provide far beyond his duties.  His death is a very sad surprise to me and all the people whose lives he touched.   In thinking back, one of the funniest stories that makes me laugh and is indicative of his understated wit was the time I was the driver towing his car(with a chain) from west side Jacksonville to a destination in the middle of south side.  I was under the impression that he had given me instructions to drive pretty fast to keep the chain tight and we were part way on the expressway.  Highly untrained, I was scared to death but kept my foot to the peddle with speed up to 50 to 55mph.  When we arrived, I was under the impression that I had "done good," but Merle promptly got out of the car, fell to his knees and kissed the ground. I was confused at first, but realized, it was his way of telling me that he thought he would never ever set foot on the ground again. It broke the tension and brought about a hilarious ending to what must have been a harrowing ride for him since he had no control. I am sure that his family will all have these wonderful stories that will ease some of the pain of losing such a special man.

Carolyn, Jeff and I worked with you and  Merle at the Commission for many, many years.  Merle, you, Jeff and I had some fun double dates and times together.  We were shocked and sad to hear of his passing.  Both Jeff and I will look back on good  memories of Merle.   Julia G. and Jeff Jansen.

Merle always entered my office with a radiant smile and a warm embrace, he will be missed by all of his friends at Endless Summer.  Rest in Peace.

It was truly a pleasure to know "Mr. Merle."  I enjoyed sitting in the rocking chairs with him and under the breezeway listening to his wonderful stories. I also enjoyed the "Summits" we had on the 2nd floor deck! The last thing he said to me was to remember that you only have one whirl at this life, so you better make sure you find what makes you happy! Don't waste any time being unhappy! I enjoyed working with Merle and Carolyn at FPPC and they were my neighbors until he retired and they took off traveling the US in their RV.  Carolyn, hold on to your memories and let them guide you during this time of sadness.  Keep in touch.

My Merle memories are all the laughs and good times we all shared.  I loved the cat and RV stories he would tell. I think about how Merle was "truly retired" and how much he enjoyed friendships here at the condo.  Merle was a smart man and a true gentleman. Merle, what an absolute joy it has been to have you and Carolyn as upstairs neighbors.  All the memories of sitting in the rocking chairs, trying to put up umbrellas by the pool, going to meetings, and the many conversations we had under the breezeway now bring us comfort.  We are so thankful to have known you--our lives are richer for it.
