Monticello "Monti" H. Campbell, 92, passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2024. She was born on February 27, 1932, to Joshua and Nora Hazzard in Bristol, Virginia. Following her graduation from Fisk University in Nashville, TN, in 1952, she married Sidney P. Campbell, Jr., and moved to St. Petersburg, FL, where she lived for 49 years. She was a school social worker in Pinellas County for 36 years. She moved to Tallahassee, FL, in 2003 and became active in many social, religious, and educational activities, including Fellowship Presbyterian Church, Church Women United, Academy at FSU (now OLLI), and the Woman's Club of Tallahassee.
Monti provided leadership and education in her social work profession on the national, state, and local levels, leaving a legacy of love, service, and humanitarianism. She served in numerous capacities during her rewarding career, including Head Start teacher and director, Head Start trainer for the University of South Florida, YWCA Program Director, and Pinellas County Anti-Poverty Agency Coordinator. She authored the grant to establish Pinellas County Head Start and wrote additional grants for Neighborhood Youth Corp, Upward Bound (Eckerd College), and School-Community Coordinator for Title I schools.
Monti, a devoted mother and matriarch, inspired her children, grandchildren, and others close to her to dream courageously, live purposefully, and love compassionately. She was a passionate patron of many art genres; one of her favorite mottos was "Art nourishes your soul." Her love of culture and adventure inspired her to travel extensively throughout the United States and Virgin Islands, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America.
She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Hazzard Campbell, and son-in-law, Kermit Burnett. She is survived by two loving daughters: Dr. Cyd P. Campbell, St. Petersburg, FL, and Dr. Carol C. Edwards (Adnan), Tallahassee, FL; five adoring grandchildren: Joshua Campbell, Jeanine Campbell-Sutton, Austin King, Maya Edwards, and Joi Edwards; four delightful great-grandchildren: Morgan Campbell, London Sutton, Joshua Campbell, Jr, and Julien Campbell; and three devoted godchildren: Bonnie Clemon, Michael Lancaster, and Debra Mosley.
