In the 1950s, she joined the Follies as Mrs. Malcolm F. “Bunny” Mick, bringing glamour and beauty to the kick-line on stage. In the 1960s and 70s she played the roles of political wife extraordinaire and Mom to her two daughters. As Mom she could be a disciplinarian, but more often was found belting out musical tunes as carpool driver (oblivious to the snickering in back seat) or stretching the rules by pulling the girls out of school for adventures. Much to Bunny’s chagrin, she indulged her girls’ every request to expand their menagerie from mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats to pigs, goats, horses and their beloved deer, Danny.
In the 1980s, she boldly reinvented herself as career woman. She began as secretary to Vice President Bill Mitchel at Capital City Bank and, through talent, integrity, and determination, rose to become Senior Vice President. Colleagues and friends sought her out as a trusted confidante, relying on her sage counsel and warm presence.
Nancy’s heart stayed as open to animals as it was to people through her final days. Her home and pastures embraced dogs, cats, horses, goats and sheep… each receiving the same dedicated care she offered to family and friends. A gifted conversationalist, she not only had the ability to make anyone feel heard and valued, but she had a great sense of humor ready with a laugh in response to others or with a slice of sarcasm of her own. Gentle and loving, yet a force to those who knew her well, Nancy inspired admiration in all who crossed her path.
A natural born artist, she became truly accomplished in her retirement and was affectionately nick-named “Rembrandt” by her teacher, Eluster Richardson.
She leaves behind a devoted circle of family and friends… her many “Nan Fans,” whose lives are richer for having known her. Her memory will be cherished, her laughter remembered, and her wisdom deeply missed.
The above picture is from Nancy’s 90th birthday dinner at Cypress Restaurant with her daughters, Terry and Kathy and dear friend Ann Lance. A celebration of Nancy’s life will take place at her home in Tallahassee in the fall for family and close friends.
