

Mrs. Agnes Mary Lobo, 91, of Coral Springs, Florida, USA, passed away peacefully at home, in the presence of her family on December 8th 2020. She was born in May 1929 in Bombay, India, the third of nine children, the eldest daughter of Sebastian and Lucy Mascarenhas. She attended St. Isabel’s School in Mazagon, Bombay and went on to earn a B.A. in English and an M.A. in History from St. Xavier’s College, Bombay University. After completing a B. Ed., she taught at St. Isabel’s School until her marriage in 1956 to Austin Anthony “Tony” Lobo, a mining engineer.
She took a break from teaching to raise her nine children in various mining towns in Bengal and Bihar, finally settling in the town of Asansol in West Bengal, India. In 1975, after her youngest son started school, she returned to teaching and continued a successful career at Loreto Convent, Asansol and later at St. Isabel’s school, Bombay. In 1993 she and Tony emigrated to the United States and lived in New York, California, Delaware, Florida, and Texas. After Tony died in 2011, she lived with her son, Peter, and his wife Jacinta (Jessie), who lovingly cared for her until her death.
Agnes spoke English, Hindi, and passable French. She loved learning and instilled in her children her love for English literature, geography, music, history, mathematics, science, and art. She was also a coach and mentor to many teachers in her place of work. She was a warm and caring person. She had a lively sense of humor and was firmly grounded in her Faith and love of family.
Agnes was predeceased by her oldest daughter Joan, and husband Tony, brothers Anthony, John and Henry, and sisters Rita and Bernadette She is survived by eight children: Susan Ruppert, in Alabama, Austin (Vinita) Lobo in Delaware, Patrick Lobo in California, Denis Lobo in Australia, Robert (Melanie) Lobo in Texas, Peter (Jacinta) Lobo in Florida, Christine (Thomas) Mayer in Indiana and Bernard (Hermina) Lobo in Florida; thirteen grandchildren- Jeremy, Rebecca, John Joseph, and Nathan Ruppert; Jonathan and Alison Lobo; Patrick Benjamin Lobo; Matthew, David, and John Xavier Lobo; Joseph Mayer; Aiden and Brendan Lobo. Survivors also include her sister Theresa D’Souza in Bombay, sisters-in-law Maria Mascarenhas in Canada and Hazel Mascarenhas in Goa, and brother in law, Neville Bhagat in Canada as well as thirteen nieces and nephews and their families.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Viewing on December 16th between 6 and 9 PM at the Bailey Memorial Funeral Home, 6701 W Commercial Blvd. Tamarac, Florida 33319.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on December 17th, 2020 at 11 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1401 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs, FL 33071 followed by interment in Fred Hunter’s Hollywood Memorial Gardens, 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, FL 33024.
