

Melvin Shelley, affectionately known as “Dennis,” was born on June 27, 1945, in St. Ann, Jamaica. He was the first-born child of Lynette Downer and William Shelley. Raised by his aunt and other loving family members, Melvin’s early years were marked by care and support. After completing his primary school education, his family, recognizing his innate abilities, encouraged him to pursue higher education. He went on to earn a degree in accounting from the Fitz-Henley School of Business. Upon graduation, he secured his first and only job at the Coffee Industry Board in Kingston, Jamaica. Melvin was a hardworking and diligent employee who consistently went above and beyond in his duties. His dedication and skills earned him a well-deserved promotion. Passionate and committed, he faithfully served in a supervisory role until his retirement in Jamaica.
Melvin met Adeline, and after several years together, he married his beautiful bride in 1989. Their union was blessed with two children, in fact, Melvin was also a devoted father to three older children. He cared deeply for all of his six his children, ensuring they never lacked anything. Known throughout his community for his generosity, he often helped those who were less fortunate. His children’s friends and many in the neighborhood affectionately called him “Dada,” as he was a father figure to many.
In March 2000, Melvin immigrated to the United States and settled in Florida. He found employment at CVS as a clerk. His strong work ethic and independent spirit allowed him to remain with the company for 20 years, leading to his second retirement. Melvin was a caring and energetic man who played a vital role in helping to care for his grandchildren. Always active and outgoing, he made it a point to stay busy and physically active every day. He also had a love for travel and experienced his first cruise just last year.
Melvin is survived by his beloved wife, Adeline; his six children: Cherry, Rose, Loxley, Donald, Donnett, and Gregory; and his three sisters: Etta-Joy, Millicent, and Olive. His grandchildren: Delano, Dondrae, Danique, Donte, Kadiesha, Shaquille, Giovanni, Kingsley, Shante, Tyler, Akera, Tahlia, Kelise and three great grandchildren. His legacy of work, kindness, and dedication lives on in all who knew and cherished him.
