With great sadness, we announce the passing of James (Jim) Michael Owen, who left this world on August 6, 2025. Born on November 24, 1949, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jim was the beloved son of the late Mel and Major Dean Owen, USAF (Ret.).
Jim is survived by his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Meisa and Bennett Ezekiel, and by the four grandchildren who were the light of his life: Jev, Kian, Jaya, and Ashalia. He is also survived by his siblings Dean Owen, Jr., Bob Owen, and Kim Whitten, his brother-in-law Sam Whitten, and their families.
As the child of an Air Force family, Jim experienced life in many places, including Japan as a toddler and several bases across the United States as his father’s career progressed. When his father retired from Minot Air Force Base in 1965, the family settled in Tampa, Florida, where Jim attended and graduated from King High School in 1968.
Jim began his professional journey as a cameraman for WFLA Channel 8 News, where he discovered his lifelong passion for photography. In 1971, he proudly served in the United States Navy as a photographer. Following his service, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and built a successful career selling professional photography equipment across media industries. Upon retirement, Jim moved to Austin, Texas, to be near his daughter and embraced his most cherished role of all—“G-pa” to his grandchildren.
Jim was also deeply passionate about music. He began playing drums in middle school, so skillfully that neighbors would often gather outside to listen. By high school, he played both drums and guitar, and he continued to play guitar throughout his life. The sound of his music, especially the tender serenades he played for his daughter, Meisa, will continue to echo in the hearts of those who loved him.
He was a connoisseur of life's ironies, with a wonderfully wicked sense of humor that brightened every conversation. His wit, warmth, and mischievous spirit leaves behind a trail of cherished memories filled with laughter and joy.
Above all, Jim’s greatest joy was his family. He often said that his daughter and grandchildren defined him and gave his life purpose. His love, humor, and devotion will remain forever in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
Sail on, Jim. You are deeply loved, and you will be forever missed.
