

J.D. Evans, Jr., aged 100, passed away on September 11, 2024, in Tampa, FL. Born on May 6, 1924, in Liberty Hill, AL, J.D. led a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community.
J.D. served valiantly in the Army during WWII, stationed in France, contributing to the Allied efforts in Europe. After returning from the war, he pursued higher education at Freed Hardeman in 1946 and was part of the first graduating class at Florida College in 1948, he then went to Alabama Polytech Institute (now known as Auburn), and then graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1951. JD married Dorothy Dulaney in December 1953. He lived in Pensacola, FL and moved to Temple Terrace, FL in 1956 where he remained until his passing.
Professionally, J.D. was deeply rooted in the community of Florida College, where he was the head of grounds maintenance and landscaping for 40 years. He also ran the college’s hydroponic tomato garden for many years and was honored with the Friend of Youth Award for his contributions.
Beyond his professional life, J.D. was an active member and spiritual shepherd at the church of Christ in Temple Terrace for over four decades, where he served the church family with dedication and love. His hobbies included growing tomatoes and gardening, passions that he nurtured throughout his life.
J.D. was preceded in death by his wives, Dorothy Evans (who passed in 1975) & Joy Evans (Kinzel) who he married in 1983. He was also preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his children, Jeff Evans, Judy Broyles, and Jimmy Evans; eight step-children, Bonnie Blachly, David Kinzel, Becky Helmink, Joyce Scott, Tom Kinzel, Tim Kinzel, Jean Hilliard, and Jill Curry; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
J.D.'s life was a testament to his strong character, resilience, contentment, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
