Upon arriving on the mainland from her native Puerto Rico, Lucy became part of the World War II effort as one of the many "Rosie the Riveter" women working in a factory to assist the war effort until marrying Lorenzo, in 1948. She also worked as a New York Telephone operator, assisted in a family owned restaurant in New York City and sang with the Big Bands in NYC. Lucy raised her family during the years when her husband, Lorenzo, served in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) as a surgeon. She traveled with her family throughout the country and always developed her love of voice and singing. She sang in many church choirs, especially during the years that Lorenzo was stationed in the Native American division of the USPHS on various Reservation lands.
Lucy retired back to Puerto Rico with Lorenzo in the late 70's where they both became "gentlemen" farmers, cultivating produce and livestock. They made one last move back to the mainland in Florida in 2002 to be close to daughter, Theresa and granddaughter, Tamara. Lucy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Her generosity was immense. She will be missed and her loving spirit will live long after her passing. The family wishes to particularly thank the very devoted caregivers, Yaneisy and Maria, who poured their love and caring into both Lorenzo and Lucy.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Lorenzo G. Guzmán. Survivors include her son, Philip Guzmán and his wife Ina of Cary, NC; daughter Theresa Guzmán Kempa of Temple Terrace, FL; granddaughter, Tamara Mashas and her husband Jason; grandson, Matthew Guzmán; and two great-grandchildren.
