It is with great sadness that we share that Basudeb “Bob” De, 80, has passed away. On Tuesday late evening, he died at home of natural causes, peacefully and quickly. Basudeb was born in Rajshahi, Bengal, India, the seventh of eight children. His father was a member of the civil service. His family moved from town to town in the Bengal region, until settling in the metropolis of Kolkata in the late 1940’s.
From a young age, Basudeb was known for his strength of character, warmth, kindness, and great sense of humor. He graduated from high school in Kolkata, and received his bachelors in civil engineering from National Institute of Technology, Durgapur. It was in college that he made some of his dearest, lifelong friends. He arrived in the US in 1971, being the first in his family to do so. He worked at varied jobs before getting an MBA from Rutgers. It was at this point he moved to Queens and began a 37-year career with Citigroup, in the corporate realty division. Throughout his career, as one of his mentees Charmaine noted, “Bob managed millions of square feet…But ask anyone who worked with him, and they’ll tell you what really mattered: Bob’s integrity, his kindness, his generosity, putting other’s first, and that remarkable work ethic that inspired everyone around him.” His work brought him to different states before his family and he settled in Florida.
His wife, Nandini, and he got married in 1978. Their marriage was known for their strong support of and trust in each other. Basudeb’s pride and joy were his two children: his son, Anindya (wife Priyanka), and daughter, Paromita. He deeply loved being a grandfather to two adorable grandsons. He is also survived by three brothers. Basudeb fiercely loved and protected his family through all the hills and valleys of life.
Basudeb loved good food, good music, and good wine. Outside of work, he liked to bike in his neighborhood, see parks and museums, and take his family both on road trips in the US and visits to India. In his retirement years, he thrived in both the kitchen and the garden. Basudeb also enjoyed watching both kinds of football, old movies (both Hollywood and Bollywood),“Iron Chef”, nature documentaries, and “House Hunters International”. He had an eye for design and liked beautiful art and fancy toy/model cars. Basudeb especially loved the Bengali community in Tampa, and sought to help them in many cultural endeavors. Whenever a family friend was in need, he was known for stepping up and helping out whatever way he could. Basudeb also reveled in being a gracious host, making sure that every detail was set to make guests feel welcome. In the last couple of years, when he was in the hospital several times due to illness, so many people visited him that the reception desk noted he must be very popular!
Every person who came across Basudeb De, whether they knew him closely or only as an acquaintance, was made a better person by knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his positive presence and impact will live on and continue to help us strive to be the best we can be, as he was.
Services will be held at Blount & Curry, Terrace Oaks, located at 12690 N. 56th Street, Temple Terrace, FL, 33617 with visitation scheduled for Sunday, December 14, 2025, starting at 11:00 am.
