Craig Steven Johnson, age 66, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at his residence in Temple Terrace, Florida. He was born on May 20, 1959, in Rochester, New York, to the late Fletcher Johnson and Willola Anderson Torrance.
Craig, affectionately known as “CJ”, attended Brockport High School in Brockport, New York. He continued his education at the State University College at Brockport, where he obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration and later met his wife, Cathy.
CJ was a devoted and loving husband to Cathy, with whom he shared 42 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories. He was a proud and devoted father to Craig Robert Matott-Johnson and a cherished grandfather to Craig (CJ), Cameron (Cam) and Chyna Johnson.
A man of faith, CJ found God at an early age and attended church with his family in Kendall Mills, New York. He loved the Lord deeply and lived his life as a God-fearing, family-oriented man whose values were evident in everything he did.
CJ was known for his warm spirit, infectious laughter, and quick wit. He had a unique ability to light up any room and make others feel like family—because to CJ, if he met you, he knew you, and you were family. He had a deep love for sports, especially Syracuse Orange men’s basketball and New York Giants football. Whether cheering passionately from his couch or playfully debating plays and statistics, he brought energy, humor, and joy to every game. His humor—sharp, genuine, and perfectly timed—left lasting smiles, even during difficult moments. He was truly a jokester who made ordinary moments unforgettable.
Above all, CJ cherished his family. He shared an unbreakable bond with his son, Craig, rooted in deep love, mutual respect, and a lifetime of treasured memories. As a grandfather, he was lovingly known as “Pop Pop,” a title he wore with immense pride. His grandchildren, CJ, Cam, and Chyna, were the light of his life, bringing him endless joy, laughter, and pride. He especially cherished attending CJ’s high school football games, cheering him on with excitement and looking forward to all that the future held.
He cherished his time with Cam, taking great joy in watching him grow, learn, and discover the world around him, always encouraging him with quiet strength and love. He imagined the prospect of one day watching Cam join his brother on the high school football field, or joining the basketball team, a thought that filled him with pride and anticipation. With Chyna, who he lovingly referred to as “Baby Girl,” he shared a special bond filled with warmth and affection, often shooting basketball with her on the hoop in their living room, delighting in her personality and the happiness she brought into his life. He cherished the many memories made with all three of them, especially the time they spent together learning to swim in the backyard pool—moments filled with laughter, encouragement, and love. Each of his grandchildren held a unique place in his heart, and his love for them will forever remain a guiding presence in their lives.
Beyond his love for family and sports, CJ enjoyed stories that reflected hope, strength, and resilience. He was a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, and Black Panther, drawn to their themes of unity, courage, and perseverance. In Star Trek, he admired the vision of a better, more compassionate future. In Black Panther, he connected with its strength, dignity, and cultural pride. And in Star Wars, he enjoyed the timeless story of good versus evil. To those who knew him, CJ was truly one of the good guys. These stories mirrored who he was-calm, loving, and supportive presence who uplifted others and led with heart.
Craig was predeceased by his parents, Fletcher Johnson and Willola Anderson Torrance; his brother, Alonzo Johnson; and his father-in-law, John “Jack” Matott.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Cathy Matott-Johnson; his son, Craig Robert (Zoey) Matott-Johnson ; and his grandchildren, Craig, Cameron, and Chyna Johnson, all of Tampa, Florida. He is also survived by his siblings: Karen Johnson, Clyde (Christine) Johnson, Eric (Stephanie) Johnson, and John Rouse of Rochester, New York; Patricia Johnson of Tampa, Florida; Gwen Andrews; and Regina (Clifford) Hardaway of Raleigh, North Carolina.
